Cordão de Ouro was founded in 1967 in Sao Paulo Brazil by Mestre Suassuna. He travelled from his home in Bahia to Sao Paulo with the aim to develop and run his own Capoeira School. When he released one of the first recorded Capoeira CD’s, which was very successful, his name became renowned throughout Brazil. Cordao de Ouro has spread across every corner of Brazil and now internationally. Cordao de Ouro has strong bases all over the world including America, U.K., Israel, Europe and most recently Indonesia.
Cordão de Ouro Birmingham (C.D.O.B) was set up in 2009 by Samuel Mascote. He graduated in Sociology at the University of Nottingham in 2008, which included research developing social theories of Capoeira. After many years training, teaching and promoting the art of Capoeira in Nottingham he decided to move to Birmingham. In 2009 Samuel Mascote graduated as a Capoeira teacher in Nottingham at an international event held by Contra-Mestre Papa-Leguas.
C.D.O.B was founded as a cultural organisation, dedicated to the promotion of Capoeira. Capoeira has grown in popularity over recent years and has been depicted in many adverts, films and music videos, most famously in the BBC ident. However even the best representations of the art found in the media do not truly depict the art as a whole. We at C.D.O.B are passionate about Capoeira and pride ourselves maintaining quality and professionalism throughout.
Capoeira has developed in the U.K. from being unheard of and practised in small community centres and sports facilities, to being taught professionally in most of the largest dance and arts institutions in the country. Some of these include: Pineapple Dance Studios, The Place, The DanceXchange as well as within many U.K. Universities. Most of the progression of Capoeira has been due to individual hard work and dedication of the artists and their communities. We believe that Capoeira should be considered in the highest regard as a top level music, visual and community art. We strive to achieve recognition for the art to which we are most passionate.
We at C.D.O.B celebrate innovation. We welcome debate, discussion and contribution to our art. Capoeira can be an artistic outlet for its members providing a means of expression through music, photography, design and dance.
